Cambodia - a tough week in Phnom Penh

Just a short entry, to let people know I'm fine despite being in a shooting incident, thanfully I sustained only a minor injury (scratches from flying glass) and nobody else was seriously hurt.

It's been a strange week with robbery, visa woes, shootings and a knife fight I was powerless to do anything about all unfolding before me. People here in Phnom Penh seem to have gone crazy, from drunken bar owners smashing up their bars to trigger happy police chasing motos down Sisowath along the Tonle Sap.

A drunken fool careening past me and across the Japanese Friendship bridge in his car killed three people and seriously injured another. Two were knocked into the Tonle Sap river where they drowned. Police caught up with the drunken student who was driving the car and took him into custody. It turned out that he was the son of a prominent police chief, and after paying a grand total of $12,000 dollars to the families of the four victims, he is yet to be charged. Under Cambodian law, it is up to the family to press charges not the police, and of course the families do not dare to protest, $3000 dollars is probably the most money they'll ever see, and that's a good price for the life of a human being where most people live off a dollar a day and many live on the streets.

More depressing is the sex trade industry some examples of which I'll post later.

Strange days indeed.

Emilio,

Ciao Bene! Molto Bene!

Yes, things have been a bit rough, but nothing serious. I was robbed of $400 by a cleaner in the guesthose, my passport is languishing in the governors office (he decided to go mon holiday for 2 weeks), there was the drive by shooting incident, and the drunken idiot that ended 3, possibly 4, lives.

How are things with you?

yechydda,

VBA,
How are you feeling now? What happened was someone aiming at you, or were you just in the wrong place, wrong time. Maybe you’d set up another Writer’s Circle? Sometimes these artistic types don’t take criticism well.
The rest of the entry was depressing too. And another depressing post later? You certainly know how to promote the site!
Hope you get your passport back soon. All this is probably enough to drive you to drink!

Oh trust me it's pretty damned depressing - I'm already hitting the bottle afr too much but there's little left to do, see the next post.

Karlos,

What, 18 months since you emailed me or got in touch you ugly bloody bastard!

Listen, I'll email you later I want to talk about the 6 nations and the Lions prospects, I won't clog up the boards here, I'm not too well at the moment, stuck in Phnom Penh and drinking and whoring too much - there's little else to do!

Talk to you later.

yechydda,
