Disaster in Iraq - the new 'constitution'

With the news breaking that the Shia and Kurdish parties have forced a constitution on the Sunni minority there can only be one conclusion. The talks over the last few days have been nothing but a farce, as I write the presses are rolling out 5 million copies of the new constitution. The Shias and the Kurds are forcing federalism upon the Sunni minority. The Sunnis occupy a resource poor area of Iraq, whereas the Shias and the Kurds are sitting on lucrative oil fields. But there are also Shias in resource poor areas of Iraq where their leaders, such as Al-Sadr, also reject federalism. The result of this farcical constitution process can only lead to all out civl war, at the very least a heightened insurgency and infighting between Shai factions such as we witnessed last week.

It's another disaster for Bush's non-existent 'plan for Iraq' where he pathetically claimed that this weeks reason for being in Iraq was so that more Americans could die to ensure that those who have already died did not do so in vain. Stay the course, he has said time and again. Staying the course is not a policy Mr.Bush. His do nothing but wait and see what happens is not good enough.

There are just two options now.

He must put in place a plan to make the country secure, something he has never been able to do to date. That means more lives lost a great increase in troop numbers on the ground tomorrow, and to take and control all major towns and cities. It means the draft. It mean ordinary Americans finally making a sacrifice alongside tens of thousands that have already given their lives and limbs for Bush's delusions.

Or it means admitting defeat and getting the hell out of the disaster zone just like in Vietnam.

As the country breaks up, the whole of the middle east is likely to be de-stabilised threatening oil supplies to the West. A tiny drop in production could have a colossal effect on the price of oil with supply already struggling to meet demand. With disastrous effects for the world economy.

The new so called constitution will be cast to referendum in October where it is likely to be rejected. Sunnis have been desperately getting their people to register a vote, one of the few positive ironies to come out of this farce. Come October the whole process will likely have to start again with new regional elections in December.

Bush and his inept cronies have to come face to face with the stark reality.

That strategically, militarily and politically they have failed utterly in Iraq.

And that tens of thousands have given their lives, yes Bush, in vain.
