As she ran she screamed in pain, Nong qua, nong qua" ("too hot, too hot"), and tore her burning clothes off in terror. The photographer, Nick Ut and his driver grabbed her and poured their canteens of water over her, to ease her pain. He then took her to Cu Chi. They became and remained firm friends.
Kim became a Canadian citizen and is now a Goodwill ambassador for UNESCO.
The picture became a rallying point for ending the war in Vietnam:
