Images that changed the world - the vulture

Dear all,

Kevin Carter was a photographer covering the famine in Southern Sudan.

'Carter heard a soft, high-pitched whimpering and saw a tiny girl trying to make her way to the feeding center. As he crouched to photograph her, a vulture landed in view. Careful not to disturb the bird, he positioned himself for the best possible image. He would later say he waited about 20 minutes, hoping the vulture would spread its wings. It did not, and after he took his photographs, he chased the bird away and watched as the little girl resume her struggle. Afterward he sat under a tree, lit a cigarette, talked to God and cried'

Carter got his shot and for it the Pullitzer Prize. But he couldn't live with the mostrosity of what he had done to get the perfect photograph.

Two months after recieving his prize, he comitted suicide.

I did research on Kevin Carter and tried to form a
"fair" opinion of the situation.

Sadly, it appears he used "art" as an excuse to do nothing. Why? We may never know. I wish his "God" had the substance required to whack him
upside the head when he chose to walk away, plop down under a tree, and feel sorry for himself.

I do not wish to judge him, and I am sure he had his reasons for doing (or not doing)in that situation. I wish his convictions had been strong enough to sustain his will to continue here.

Perhaps in some parallel existence he can rewind the film of his life...and after snapping the photo, pick up the little girl and carry her to
where the food is.

Perhaps in a parallel existence, she can dance in a field of flowers, with a full belly, and a healthy family looking on.

There is no "God" to save us. There is only us, and we must save ourselves. And when we can, each other.

R.I.P. Kevin Carter.

Mabs,

It can be difficult at times to find saving graces for peoples reactions. But remember that he did kill himslef, why, nobody can be completely sure, but I like to think that he was ashamed of his actions, it's a bad saving grace to be sure, but a grace nontheless. It's a timely reminder that in pursuit of ambition we can often lose the path and become the very monsters we seek to excorcise.

It is typical of you that you would endeavour to find the good in this soul, and I am entirely sure that there is indeed some good within him. And that he has paid his price for his inner guilt. If there is such a thing as reincarnation, then I strongly believe that he will return a wiser man and a more human one.
