Last week an article in Newsweek sparked off riots in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Indonesia and elsewhere. Some 17 people were reported to have died in the anti-US riots. They were caused by claims made in Newsweek that interrogators at Guantanamo bay flushed a copy of the Koran down the toilet.

Later, Whitehouse spokesman Scott Mclellan said,

"The report had real consequences. People have lost their lives. Our image abroad has been damaged."

He ruther added,

"by talking about the way they got this wrong and pointing out what the policies and practices of the United States military are when it comes to the handling of the holy Koran."

And finally,

"We do incarcerate innocent Muslims, torture them, sexually humiliate them, sodomise them, electrocute them and murder them, but never, on any account would we flush the Holy Koran down the pan. Honest."
